The China Syndrome (1979)

Oscar-nominated thriller starring Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas and Jack Lemmon. A reporter finds what appears to be a cover-up of safety hazards at a nuclear power plant.The film was released on 16th March 1979, just twelve days before the real-life partial meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania.

Silkwood (1983)

Meryl Streep stars as Karen Silkwood, a metallurgy worker at a plutonium processing plant who was purposefully contaminated, psychologically tortured and possibly murdered to prevent her from exposing blatant worker safety violations at the plant. Nominated for 5 Oscars.

Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986)

Comedy from cult B-Movie producers Troma Entertainment about a New Jersey high school (Tromaville High), conveniently located next to a nuclear power plant. The facility is seeping radioactive waste, which leads inevitably to rapid and dramatic mutations amongst the student population.

Raspad (1990)

Soviet-era Ukrainian film presenting a fictionalised re-creation of the disaster at Chernobyl, with the accident serving as a metaphor for the breakdown of moral values in the collapsing social/political system. Raspad is Russian for collapse or deterioration.

 

 

 

 

Edge of Darkness (1985)

British TV drama series originally broadcast in 6 episodes. As Yorkshire detective Ronald Craven (Bob Peck) investigates the murder of his daughter (Joanne Whalley), he draws closer to the dangerous inner sanctums of organised environmental protests and nuclear power interests. Winner of 6 BAFTA awards.
